2019 Favourites.

I already made a Letterboxd list of my top five of the year but I kind of wanted to expand a bit on my picks.

5. Parasite (Joon-Ho, S. Korea)

Okay so this one hasn't had a proper UK release yet (I had to turn to the dark world of putlocker don't hate me I was desperate) but even on the small screen this is one of the most powerful films I've seen in a long time. A masterclass in suspense, performance, direction, social commentary and just about everything else. I can't wait to watch this legally, on a cinema screen.

4. Marriage Story (Baumbach, USA)

I'm quite a big fan of Baumbach's previous work and this has already taken the top spot for me. The argument scenes are just so impressive and the last big one is easily my favourite scene of the year if not the decade. Seamlessly switching from being the most emotionally strong thing I've seen to being the funniest thing I've seen in less than a second. It just feels like a miracle that the script was pulled off so well, this is largely due to some phenomenal performances (I know awards don't matter but oscars for everyone involved please) and perfect direction from Baumbach. Also, Laura Dern.

3. Booksmart (Wilde, USA)

I was literally on the edge of my seat during the final act of this film, I can't remember the last time I cared about fictional characters as much as I did Amy and Molly. Just a great teen comedy about friendship. I saw this one a few days after finishing college and before I moved to Sheffield to start uni and I know it's corny, but it did mean a lot to me. Seeing characters in the same position as you and those around you will always be amazing. Kaitlyn Dever, I love you.

2. Portrait of a Lady on Fire (Sciamma, France)

Just a work of art (haha). Please see it on general release and in a cinema.

1. The Irishman (Scorsese, USA)

It's honestly tied with Portrait but if you know me this won't come as any surprise. It's a new three and a half hour Martin Scorsese mob film starring Robert De Niro, Joe Pesci, Al Pacino, and Harvey Keitel. Need I saw anymore?

2019 was a great year for film and trying to whittle it down to five favourites was so hard. If it was a top 6 list just know Godzilla: King of the Monsters would be on here. I can't wait to see what 2020 has in store.
